MtyMx: SXSW Alternative Moves South

Brooklyn-based lo-fi concert promoter Todd P is migrating south of the border this March. The inaugural MtyMx All Ages Festival of Art and Music will be held the weekend of March 20-22 in Monterrey, Mexico.

With something like 25 bands a day playing staggered sets (yes! you won’t have to miss a single one), the performances will be “outdoors on two stages in a beautiful drive-in movie theater on the side of a mountain in the Sierra Madre Oriental.”

On-site camping and off-site hotel rooms will be available. Tickets are $30 for the entire weekend. Click here for more info.

James Beaudreau - Strayhorn

James Beaudreau’s “Strayhorn,” a solo improvisation performed on a 1966 Gibson 330 hollow body guitar, was posted for streaming and free MP3 download this week by his netlabel, Workbench Recordings. The track was originally released on Beaudreau’s Fresh Twigs album in 2008 and was remastered by Scott Hull in January, 2010.

New Tom Waits / Robert Wilson Project

Following in the footsteps of their collaborations on the Black Rider (1990; with author William S. Burroughs), Alice (1990) and Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck (2000), Tom Waits and Robert Wilson reunite for a fourth production to premiere in 2011 at the Chatelet Theater in Paris. This time around the two will team up with Irish playwright Martin McDonagh (The Cripple of Inishmaan, The Pillowman), who is best known for directing the 2008 cult classic gangster film In Bruges.

James Mercer of The Shins to perform at Seattle Benefit in February

The Shins’ James Mercer will perform at the Moore Theatre in Seattle, WA on February 11, 2010 for “Defriending Cancer,” a variety show hosted by Todd Barry to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Mercer will join a diverse lineup of performers which includes Neil Hamburger, Tim Heidecker, Natasha Leggero, Eugene Mirman and Tig Notaro.
